Invited Solo Exhibition
Heeouk Kim
For nearly eight decades, Kim Heeouk has diligently remained devoted to her brush, creating works inspired by the multicultural energy of Los Angeles and exploring the layered emotional landscape that shapes urban life. The hundreds of individually rendered faces that populate her canvases are each entirely distinct, with no two figures alike. Each is depicted through a unique gesture and movement, expressing a wide range of emotions—from joy and sorrow to anger, confusion, and clarity—revealing the complexity of human experience.
The figures within her compositions drift through imagined spaces, intersecting and forming relationships with one another. Their gestures and movements suggest narrative, yet resist being confined to any single story. By arranging these figures within a shared pictorial field, the artist reflects the simultaneous connection and tension, intimacy and distance, that define human relationships. These numerous small figures, much like our own lives, become both the background and the protagonists within the larger composition of existence.
