Invited Solo Exhibition

Justin Lui

Justin is a designer and artist whose work explores the integration of responsive media into the physical world. Through his immersive installations, Justin examines the dynamic relationship between media technology and architecture, creating objects, spaces, and surfaces that are tactile yet ephemeral. His works challenge viewers to reconsider their spatial awareness and existence, inviting new perspectives on the environment around them.

Justin’s artistic practice blends electronics, UX design, and spatial design, with an emphasis on innovation and interaction. Originally from Toronto, Canada, he is now based in Los Angeles. He holds degrees from UCLA’s Design Media Arts and Architecture & Urban Design programs, as well as from the Carleton University School of Architecture.

Dragon Scales

Dragon Scales is an expandable system of geometrically-surfaced low-resolution LED panels that form a glowing shingled surface. Cardstock shells are shingled and embedded with LEDs, hiding the LED bulbs from direct view while also diffusing their glowing light.

This system of light-diffusing shells combined with pixel-mapped LEDs results in a display system that acts as a ‘blurring machine’ that physically and digitally applies visual effects to inputted animations, videos, and images.

5' 9-1/4" x (H) 5' 0" (W) x 5" (D), LED bulbs in acrylic panels, cardstock, computer with programmable video loop.

Poly Mer

Poly-Mer is a light sculpture art piece which repurposes the plastic trays that contact lenses are packaged in, and layers them into a shingled translucent surface. The material surface formed by these trays diffuses the glowing light of a low-resolution grid of LEDs, which are animated by a video loop of ocean waves.

By bringing plastic and water together in this way, Poly-Mer aims to remind us of the perils of plastic ocean pollution.

Plastic contact lens trays, LEDs, 3D prints, electronics, wood, and computer with video loop.

Sky upon sea

Seigaiha (Sky Upon Sea) is a modular LED panel system that forms a glowing shingled surface. This surface is a 3-dimensional manifestation of a traditional Japanese Seigaiha graphic pattern.

36-1/2" (W) x 22" (H) x 3-1/2" (D) (may be expanded to 42" tall), 3D prints, LED bulbs in acrylic panels, electronics, and computer with programmable video loop.
